Tips to Keep in Mind When Installing Stone Floor Tiles

Why not try stone tiles if you're searching for a stunning flooring choice for your home? Here are some tips to keep in mind while installing this flooring.

Colour and Texture Variation

Natural stone tiles vary in their colours, veining, swirls, and textures. For example, travertine has a porous surface and comes in beige, white, pink, and other colours. Slate is available in earthy grey, blue, brown, and amber with a natural cleft finish. The hues within stone emerge from the minerals that flow throughout each piece of rock. Because the mineral composition is variable, each tile is slightly different. Thus, don't expect the patterns and colours on the tiles to be entirely constant. Expect them to exhibit organic, natural variances.

Blending Tiles

Because of this irregularity, it's a good idea for your contractors or yourself to dry lay the tiles. This test run involves spreading all the tiles across the floor without fixing them in place. Once you can see everything, you can check whether you're happy with the result.

To minimise obvious shifts in patterns and colours, you'll need to blend tiles from each carton. This will distribute variations more equally over the floor, ensuring that one part does not appear to be too different from another. If you see tiles with especially lovely shades or textures, you could lay them in a central spot to exhibit their full beauty for everyone to see. Tiles can also show flaws or more visible pores, and you could lay these in less conspicuous flooring areas.

Stone Tile Care

Because all-natural rock is permeable to some extent, you'll need to use a penetrating sealer to protect the stone tiles. These sealants seep into the surface's tiny pores, preventing water and stains from getting in. Penetrating sealers don't usually alter the appearance of the flooring; they're almost undetectable.

You need to take care when cleaning natural stone. Avoid using acidic or harsh cleansers that can harm the stone. Dirt and sand across the flooring can cause damage as it becomes abrasive as people walk across the surface. Thus, use a dust mop or broom regularly to keep the surface clean. Additionally, be careful when vacuuming to ensure that hard edges on the vacuum cleaner don't scratch the tiles. To protect the flooring from daily wear, you could place area rug rugs in high traffic spots. Just make sure the underside is non-slip to keep everyone safe.
